ENGLISH I BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS!
Mrs. Hapgood's English I students formed book groups for their last assignment of the school year. Each group chose a novel to read. Students discussed their novels and then wrote a group book review about their chosen novel. Here is what they had to say:
Blue Bloods Book Review
By Marissa Galloway and Kalli Rigg

Melissa De LA Cruz wrote a fictional book, Blue Bloods. We read this for book club in our English class and we recommend it for you.
Schuyler, Oliver, Bliss, Mimi, Jack, and Dylan are the main characters at the Duchesne school in Manhattan, New York. At the beginning of this book, Aggie, one of their classmates, dies. This is a big shock to the community of the school.
A few days later, a meeting was held for only certain students at school. The people called to this meeting found at that they were not human -- they were vampires, Blue Bloods. The Blue Bloods have formed an organization, the Conclave. Schuyler and her Blue Blood friends realized that Aggie shouldn’t have died because she was a vampire, like them, and vampires can’t die. Schuyler and her friends decide to research a little about this and find out that Conclave is hiding secrets about the Silver Bloods, who are a powerful and strong vampire group. Silver Bloods can destroy Blue Bloods. How are the Blue Bloods going to deal with the Silver Bloods? Are the Silver Bloods going to destroy the Blue Bloods forever?
Melissa De LA Cruz wrote a very different vampire story from most authors. In them she includes humor, horror and some real life teen experiences. This book keeps your interest and makes you want to read more.
Speak Book Review By Abbie Burke, Chrissy Sinn, and Ashley Oliver

Speak, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about a girl named Melinda Sordino who is entering high school without any friends and a bad reputation, all because of a summer party gone horribly wrong. Melinda was asked to dance by popular, attractive Andy Evans at the party. Something shocking happens and Melinda called the cops, who arrive at the party and arrest many of her friends and classmates. Everyone hated her. Melinda didn’t tell anyone what really happened. It eats her up inside and she stops speaking.
On the first day of school freshman year, lonely Melinda meets a new student Heather, who becomes someone Melinda can hang out with. Melinda’s grades drop dramatically, except in Art where she actually tries, because she has a nice teacher who is actually supportive. Her parents are not very supportive and they don’t understand her. At the end Melinda gets revenge on the person that caused her all this harm and she learns how to speak again.
Overall, the book was ok. It could have been more interesting and more action. If you are entering high school, this will be a good book for you because it explains how high school can be hard, but things do get better after awhile. Readers will feel bad for Melinda, but the story has a somewhat happy ending.
Revelations Book Review
By Sammy England and Joe Logston

Revelations, the third novel in the Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz focuses on a young teenage girl named Schuyler Van Alen. The young half-blooded vampire faces adversity; she must either save her grandfather or the vampire race. On top of that, her love life is in jeopardy when she marks her conduit with the Caerimonia Osculor and makes him her human familiar. She is also having a secret affair with a man destined for another girl. Schuyler’s lover, Jack Force, is to be bonded with his vampire twin Mimi Force. The twins are destined to be together because they are two halves of a whole and without the bond they become weaker. What will she do?
Schuyler’s grandfather, Lawrence, travels to Rio on official Conclave business. He heard from an inside source that there was an earthquake at the Blue Blood center of power, Corcovado. A Silver Blood is imprisoned inside the mountain at Corcovado, Leviathan, the devil’s brother. When Schuyler and Oliver arrive in Rio to help Lawrence, they soon find that all is not as well as they thought. The ancient enemy is back again to wreak havoc and destroy the Blue Blood race. Without Schuyler, the Blue Bloods will surely perish.
Overall, we both enjoyed reading this novel; we actually loved the entire series of Blue Bloods. It was fascinating in the book how most human traditions originated from the Blue Bloods. One turn-off was the complications of the vampire and human families; it was very incestuous and intertwined. We came to a consensus that Revelations was well written and it kept us turning pages. It’s a fabulous series for any vampire lovers or anyone looking for a juicy book!
Damage Book Review
By Zach Talbert, Austin Doolin and Corey Egner

The book we read is Damage by A.M Jenkins for a group English assignment. Austin is a popular 17 year old boy that lives in a small rural Texas community. He attends Parkside High School and he is a football star that does well in school. Austin met a girl at his school named is Heather. Austin thinks she is the one for him because they do everything together and are already in love. She also loves to be the center of attention and wears short skirts or even short shirts, which catches everybody’s attention.
Ever since he saw her at the football game, they are always together no matter what. Austin even chooses to hang out with her rather than his guy friends. They were hanging out so much, that they eventually were getting into fights. The truth comes out for both of them, which make them have to face the true facts of life. Lucky Austin has a true friend that helped him through his hard times when he was having feelings of committing suicide.
As a group, we thought this was a great book to read. Not only was it about sports, but romance too. The book got us all to think about the hardships teens are facing today. This book is action packed and always leaves readers wondering what will happen next.
The Grapes of Wrath Book Review
By: Justin Aldred, Erik Teutsch, and Kali Hartzold

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is a classic piece of literature written during the Great Depression. After the Dust Bowl, many small farm families were forced off their land by the banks. Tom Joad’s family was one who packed up their necessities and valuables and headed off to California in search of jobs that could provide enough income to feed the family.
As they ran out of money, they ate less and less, even though his married sister was pregnant and the children were becoming thin. When the family reached California, along with thousands of other migrants, they realized jobs were scarce. Looking for a steady job was an endless task. If a Joad was able to find a job, all of that day’s earnings were put towards food but still the family was hungry. To make all of these problems worse, the police in California didn’t particularly care for these newcomers. If a migrant was killed, it was labeled as an accident and forgotten.
The Grapes of Wrath has been labeled as a classic along with other wonderful books. However, this book was difficult to find interesting because of the extreme amount of detail. There were several chapters that did not seem necessary to the telling of the story to us. The plot didn’t become obvious until the middle of the book. At this point, it became much easier to read, but we still wouldn’t choose to read this book again. This book is not a good choice for a teen looking for a fun read; it’s a better choice for someone who wants to read a classic piece of literature or learn about the depression era.
The Pact Book Review
by Bailey Moore and Sarah Jackson

The Pact by Jodi Picoult was a very emotional and touching story. When two kids grow up together and eventually fall love, things change drastically for the worst. After Chris is accused of murdering his best friend and lover Emily, his life, along with everyone else, changes. Families are torn apart and hearts are broken. Will Chris be sent to prison because he is accused of murdering Emily?
The story takes place in a small town named Bainbridge where everyone knows everyone else’s business. The main characters are Chris and Emily, and their parents, Melanie and Michael, Emily’s parents, and Gus and James, Chris’s parents. Melanie and Gus were absolute best friends. However, Emily was found dead of a gun shot wound, all the evidence pointed to Chris. The two families’ relationship and deep bond fell apart. Will the two families bonds be able to reconnect after such a tragic incident?
Overall many people would agree that The Pact is a very moving book. The best thing about The Pact is how romantic it is. It has moments when it’ll make you laugh and cry. We chose this novel because we both like romantic stories and it sounded a romantic story.
